The University Grants Commission (UGC) is the apex body of the University System in Sri Lanka which was established on 22nd December 1978 under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978. The functions of the UGC are; planning and coordination of university education, allocation of funds to Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), maintenance of academic standards, regulation of the administration of HEIs and regulation of admission of students to HEIs.

Ensuring the financial integrity of government institutions through audits. Overseeing the work of the Auditor General, conducting audits of public accounts, and ensuring transparency in public financial management.
Overseeing the police force's functioning and maintaining discipline within the police service. Recommending appointments, transfers, promotions of police officers, and ensuring police accountability. NPC established under the 21st Amendment and is vested with powers pertaining to the Establishment Matters and entertaining and investigation of public complaints against Police Officers.
Managing appointments, transfers, promotions, and disciplinary control of public officers. Ensuring merit-based recruitment, maintaining public service standards, and addressing grievances of public servants.
On 13th November 2015 members for the Independent Election Commission were appointed thus establishing the Election Commission with effect from November 2015 under the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. Mr. Mahinda Deshapriya, Commissioner of Elections was appointed as the Chairman of Election Commission while the other two members of the Commission were Mr. N.J. Abeyesekere PC. and Prof. S. Rantnajeevan H. Hoole. The Department of Elections was replaced by the Election Commission.
